Couples' registry begins with three anniversaries

Cleveland-As a way to recognize the many gay and lesbian couples in our community who are in long-term, committed relationships, the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of Greater Cleveland has formed a couples' registry.

The registry is open to all couples with at least a family membership at the center ($40 or more annually). Couples may register with the couples' registry whether or not they have had a formal commitment ceremony.

Registered couples will receive a "Certificate of Recognition" from the center. The center will then compile a list of anniversaries and other milestones for publication in

the Chronicle as well as the center's quarterly newsletter.

Call Jan Cline at the center at 216522-1999 for more information.

The following couples celebrated anniversaries in May:

Doug Braun and Brian DeWitt, May 11, 1989. Celebrating ten years!

Debi and Heather Parker, May 24, 1997. Celebrating two years!

Judy Maruszan and Sue Ballard, May 17, 1984. 15 years!

Judy Maruszan also coordinates the center's SSAFE program.

Transgender convention will be in Cleveland

by Susie Davis

Cleveland-Transgendered Cleveland rocks, and yes, wow, the second oldest transgendered convention in the world is to be in Cleveland June 2 through June 6. This BeAll Convention is not only well entrenched through time, but it draws one of the largest transgendered attendance in the world, some from far as Europe, Central America and the Far East-yes, they do challenge their gender expression there too.

Any people of gender diversity are encouraged to come and enjoy self-expression within a loving open group of transgendered people of varied agendas.

The convention provides professional seminars covering a diverse track from the fun training of the cross dresser; to the developing of understanding of family members; to the potential understanding of the surgical and mental needs of the transitioning transgendered or transsexual person. Seminars feature such diverse professionals as the great Hollywood

makeup artist Jim Bridges to the renowned photo journalist Marriette Pathy Allen, to the world renowned gender reconstruction surgeon, Dr. Sheila Kirk.

The Be-All convention offers all the building blocks of transgendered understanding along with a fantastic platform for fun, from poolside luaus to stage shows.

Saturday night offers a sneak preview of a developing professionally-staged musical by Christine Howey and Katherine Harvey. Howey is the author of the recent offBroadway play Making Faces, which debuted in New York in March.

This great Be-All convention comes to Cleveland every five years, we suggest that you enjoy it now. Prices range from $280 for an all inclusive five day package, to a seminars-only package of $50. Specific charges and more information can be obtained from the two area GLBT centers at 216-522-1999 (Cleveland) or 330-253-2220 (Akron). ▼ Susie Davis is co-chair of the 1999 Be-All convention.

Bishop to visit lesbian and gay Episcopal group

Columbus-On Thursday evening, June 10, the Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price, Suffragan Bishop of the Southern Ohio Diocese of the Episcopal Church will participate, on invitation of its steering committee, with members of Integrity Central Ohio at their regular, monthly meeting.

This occurs at 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Stonewall Community Center in Columbus.

Stonewall Community Center is the gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender cultural hub and meeting space located at the corner of Fourth Avenue and North High Street in Columbus' Short North district. It has been the meeting place for Integrity Central Ohio since its startup last winter.

Integrity Central Ohio is the local chapterin-formation of Integrity, Inc., which is the national, gay and lesbian advocacy group within the Episcopal Church of America. The local chapter strives to increase their visibility, through attendance at worship in local Episcopal churches, as well as outing themselves as Christians within the gay and lesbian communities of Central Ohio.

As explained by its steering committee members, the reason for Bishop Price's visit to the next meeting of the Integrity chapter is so that members may discuss with him the “Resolution on Sexuality” of last summer's Lambeth Conference at Kent University in Canterbury, England.

The Lambeth Conference was the thirteenth such international meeting of bishops within the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church in America is a part. The resolutions and commendations of these periodic conferences are meant to be advisory in nature, and not legislative.

Included in its "Resolution on Sexuality" last August, the Lambeth Conference rejected "homosexual practice as incompatible with Scripture." the comnference also advised the denial of Angelican clergy to the blessing of same-sex unions within the church. This resolution passed by a vote of 526 in favor and 70 against, with 45 abstentions.

Understandably, many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members of the Episcopal Church have been negatively impacted by this resolution and have felt increasingly alienated and disenfranchised from their church because of these harshly judgmental commendations.

It is the hope of the steering committee and all members of Integrity Central Ohio that their eagerly awaited dialogue with Bishop Price, on June 19, will prove to be healing and respectful and will increase communication between the GBLT community within the Southern Ohio Diocese and its bishops.

As the meeting is open to the public, all are welcome to attend. For further information, contact Warren MacPherson at 614-443-1073 or via e-mail at WmacPher2@aol.com.✔
